Just at press time I received a copy of the above book from Charles Kliment of Princeton, NJ. Many of you will have heard of this Czech book on the Internet, but the fact that there is an English version as well, makes it a treasure. We have all been waiting for a book that gives serious coverage to the topic, and I think this might be it. This is a well bound book on glossy stock featuring full color process printing and color chart featuring 21 RAL number swatch patches.

The text leads us through the various periods from before the war right to the end, and explains when and why cammo changed. It flows through Poland, the Blitzkrieg period, North Africa, Russia and the defense of the West.

Very few of the photos have been seen before and some of the new ones are outstanding, and 8 of the color shots show the captured German vehicles as they arrived at APG back in 1945. The author also presents excellent color corrected close-up shots of gear such as Jerry cans, headlamps, water bottles, which still display their original colors. A series of 3 pages of cammo patches lead you from 1937 to 1945, accurately showing the development of German camouflage patterns over the years. The book closes with 3 pages of RAL hue matches with Humbrol, Agama and Revell paints.

Veľmi zaujímavá publikácia podrobne rozoberá problematiku kamufláží nemeckej pozemnej techniky v období 2. sv. v. Pozostáva z obsiahleho textu doplneného množstvom dobových ČB a F fotografií, často veľmi raritných. Zaujímavá je obrazová časť obsahujúca kvalitné súčasné F fotky rôznych častí vozidiel a výstroje s ešte pôvodnym náterom. Veľmi zaujímavá je časť predstavujúca v jednotlivých „okienkach“ farebné vzory rôznych období a rôznych bojísk. Srdcom celej publikácie je však rozsiahla tabuľka popisujúca jednotlivé odtiene používaných farieb, vrátanie ich zaradenia v škále RAL, a pre modelára veľmi dôležitého „receptu“ ako daný odtieň namiešať z farieb u nás dostupných (Revell, Humbrol, Agama). Vrcholom je vzorkovník pozostávajúci zo štvorčekov nastriekanych (!) jednotlivými odtieňmi. Ťažko povedať, čo viac by mohla jedna publikácia na túto tému obsahovať. Cena cca 700 Sk je plne zodpovedajúca kvalite tejto publikácie. Možno len odporúčať.

„Strach je nejlepší malíř“ – motto, které je příznačné pro toto dílo. „Dílo“ je ten pravý výraz pro práci, kterou autor odvedl a předal do užívání široké veřejnosti. Zájemcům o pozemní techniku Wehrmachtu, ať již z řad historiků nebo modelářů se tak dostala do rukou ucelená monografie, v níž naleznou předpisy a systém kamuflování jednotlivých vozidel podle druhů (automobily osobní i nákladní, polopásová vozidla, tanky protiletadlová děla atd.). Dále je zde popsán systém kamuflování v jednotlivých obdobích války a v závislosti na terénu bojiště. Text zahrnuje i podrobnější informaci o způsobu provádění kamufláže, maskovací vzory a celek je vhodně doplněn ukázkami, které navozují atmosféru jednotlivých období a bojů. Nedílnou součástí je stejně jako v předchozích „Kamuflážních barvách Luftwaffe 1939–1945“ tabulka barevných odstínů, vzorky kamufláží a vzorník barev. Celek pak vhodně doplňují fotografie, z nichž přibližně polovina je barevných.

Ač je celá publikace v angličtině, český čtenář o nic nepřijde. Před zadní deskou je vložen český překlad celého textu včetně všech popisek k fotografiím, poznámek, tabulek a dokonce i přehledu zkratek, používaných německou armádou v letech 1939–1945.

The book is very interesting as it gives a detailed overview on camouflage colours used by the German army during WW II. It's based on authentic German documents and not on some guesswork by the author. Most interesting for me all the documents used for the book are printed at the end, something I would love to see more often. But bad luck for all those who are not able to read German, the documents are printed in German. The rest of the text is English.

Very interesting are the photos as the book includes a lot of rare and unpublished photos taken at the end of the war in the Czech Republic including for example 251/22, 234/3, armoured 11 with 2 cm Flak 38.

Very highly recommended.

Was für den Flugzeugmodellbauer der Monogram Painting Guide, könnte für die Fahrzeugsammler schon bald das neue Buch von Tomás Chory aus der Tschechischen Republik sein.
Was der Autor hier auf lediglich 70 hochwertig gedruckten Seiten in englischer Sprache aufführt, ist schon erstaunlich. Neben Vorwort, eigentlichen Aufgaben von Tarnfarben und Informationen über RAL folgt ein kurzer Abriss über die meisten Fahrzeuge von Heer und Wehrmacht – bis dahin eigentlich nichts Besonderes. Richtig interessant wird es ab Seite 29, ab diesem Kapitel geht es sozusagen ans Eingemachte.
In kurzen aber sehr informativen Auszugen wird auf die einzelnen Feldzuge in Zusammenhang mit den verwendeten lackierungen eingegangen, anschliessend folgen die Beschreibungen der Farben mit genauen Angaben über RAL-Nummern, bzw. den damaligen Vorgaben der Mischungen und des Verwendungszweckes, ebenso geht der Autor kurz auf Fleckentarnungen und Zimmerit ein.
Zum Schluss des Kapitels gibt es noch eine Aufstellung der üblichen Farbschemen, welche durch drei Farbseiten ergänzt werden.
Für den Modellbauer besonders interessant dürften die letzten Kapitel sein, hier finden sich zu jeder Farbe genaue Angaben zur Verwendung und Hinweise auf gängige Modellbaufarben wie Humbrol und Revell, ergänzt durch eine Seite Farbchips, gespritzt mit Originalfarben (kein Druck). Auch hierzu gibt es wieder Farbfotos von originalen Ausrüstungsgegenständen als Beleg.
Den Abschluss bilden Auszüge (in Deutsch) aus den Heeresanweisungen zu den einzelnen Farben mit entsprechenden Auflistungen in TabeIlenform.
Zwar schliesst auch dieses Buch sicher nicht absolut jede Wissenslücke, ist aber in dieser Art und Qualität bisher führend und den Anschaffungspreis in jeder Hinsicht wert.
